Brown University, Division of Biology and Medicine, Providence, RI
Dr. Gardner worked with the Associate Dean for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies to develop the evaluation plan and serves as the independent evaluator for this NIH Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) training grant. The five-year grant was awarded in the spring of 2008. Each year, she conducts a climate survey (diversity, inclusion, and training support) for all PhD students in the program and interviews faculty, staff, students, and board members regarding the impact of the program. She also evaluates the partnerships established with three other universities designed to interest undergraduate students in PhD programs and careers in research.

The Career Resources Division of FASEB asked for assistance in evaluating two large National Institutes of Health (NIH) training grants, part of the Minority Access to Research Careers Program. The grants covers several programs including Grantsmanship training, the Visiting Scientist Program, National Meeting Travel Awards, Summer Research Conferences, and the Summer Research Opportunities Program. Dr. Gardner designed a research methodology to obtain the views of participating research scientists, university professors, postdoctoral fellows, and students (graduate and undergraduate regarding program benefits and outcomes.) She has served as the independent evaluator for the grants since 2000. |
